Hand sewing is a technique rarely found amongst carpet fitters. I most commonly use this technique around bull-nose stairs. This provides a more pleasing finish, continuing the flow of the carpet right to the bottom rather than a band being fitted around the bottom step, and the top being nailed on (cap and band). Hand sewing also reduces damage to the stair as it does not require nails to secure the carpet around the curve. Occasionally, I also use sewing for small joins, where the normal heat seamer is not practical.
